Cycling to the beach – Strahan, Tasmania

I remember of the day
The rhythm of my feet
On the pedals as the bicycle
Thrust the wind like a clean blade,
Llilac shadows of heather on the sepia land,
The gold-limned sky that poured down
Its benediction of violet incense
At journey’s end.

I remember of the day
The last light like golden rain,
The white-maned horses galloping
In from the sea, rearing on the sand
And perishing, how the wild flight
Against the wind and the deepening sky
Made all that the hours contained
Shine like crystal.

I long to capture each nuance
Of that bright time as I would
Hold fast to the love that recedes,
White-foamed and salty,
And the last vestiges of youth
That run through my fingers
Like fine sand.
