Today after the monsoon rains,
The light fell chiaroscuro
Upon the angsana leaves.
Today the twilight was playful,
Gambolling like a soft animal
Upon the silvered grass.
Today it was gentle,
Stroking the tree trunks
With tender fingers.

Today the sun flashed aqua
On the black sheen
Of the male sunbird’s breast.
Today the mother bird
Cleaned the slick
From the hatchling’s feathers;
Today the chick flew
For the first time
Into the morning sky.
Today the swoop of swiftlets
Filled the bright evening.

Everyday the grasses
Are tipped with gold
And the rain-blooms
Shine from within.
Everyday the earth calls me
To lift my face, to love.
Forgive me! I pass on my way
Ensconced in my petty sorrows.
