Personal sharing and words of encouragement from Matthew 17:20; Romans 8:31; Philippians 4:13, for all who face difficulties and trials and dangers in life
Dear friends, in life we often face set backs and disappointments, but we need not be afraid because the Lord Jesus tells us as He was speaking to His disciples about the need to have faith in Matthew 17:20 “He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, nothing will be impossible for you.”
When we face difficult situations and trials which are common we can always remember that the Lord is for us as the Holy Spirit says through the Apostle in Romans 8:31 “What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” and also in Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Recently, I have been reflecting on my long journey spanning many years; come to think of it, I’ve been learning and relearning what it means to be a Catholic Christian, as a beloved child of God the Father, a disciple of Jesus Christ my Lord and King and Teacher and Greatest Friend and Brother, and a young man following the Holy Spirit who leads us always towards Jesus Christ and the Father.
From a cradle Catholic who had difficulties in school, to a youth active in Church ministries, and in between, one who had a colourful life as a part-time factory worker, an intern at several offices, a police officer, traveller and pilgrim in the lands of USA, Australia, New Zealand, (Southern, Eastern & Central) Europe, China.
Now, having worked as an external auditor for quite some time, I reflect on what has been going on in my life since I finished my time as a cop, studies abroad and return to the ‘lion city’ where I was born and am back to live. I see that the deep personal encounters with the Lord and His Kingdom both heaven and the pilgrim Church on Earth since I was a child and throughout my youth have made me live a different life from most people of my generation.
Because the Lord loves me so I dare to change my life around from my early teens to my young adult life of spending time daily to pray and read the Bible and attend Mass almost daily for several years now, and I have had an active ministry involvement even during my National Service, overseas university and working life back home. What gives me joy is to spend time with the Lord and to love the people that He places in my life together with the Lord.
Many times in life I have actually been very stressed and had hard times for months, but I still persevere in my journey because the Lord loves me. I no longer need to cower in fear as I was bullied badly as a child and I no longer need to fight several people at once, let alone train to fight against dozens of people at the same time which I did in a more dangerous state of life. That was because of duty and safety of civilians and team mates. I almost had to a couple of times in the distant past, pardon me for that, but I have met and interacted with people who have been sentenced to death for some of the worst crimes and sins. I’m against capital punishment such as the death penalty and have grown to be anti-violent and anti-competitive, because the Lord is the Giver of all life and He has already begun the work of saving people from sin and death. I have gradually come to understand and experience over time that we as humanity are fighting a war against demons who are fallen angels, but on our side we have the Lord God who is greater than all and also the armies of God, the legions of Holy Angels and the Saints. And also everyone is definitely loved by the Lord as He taught me over time that He loves us and wants us to turn away from our sins and answer His call to Love and Holiness.
For God who created each and every person in his image and likeness loves us all, for that is why He sent His only Son Jesus Christ the Eternal Word of God Incarnate and it is through Him that all things were made. If there is anytime we feel troubled just remember that the Lord is with us, spend time with Him and let Him be in charge, and we just do our part and pray. And remember we are all sinners saved by the Lord and called to ongoing conversion to work with the Lord for the greater glory of the Lord God and the salvation of all mankind and renewal of all of God’s creation.
