Isaiah 11:10 “That day, the root of Jesse, standing as a signal for the peoples, will be sought out by the nations and its home will be glorious.”
Micah 5:1 – 2 “But you (Bethlehem) Ephrathah, the least of the clans of Judah, from you will come for me a future ruler of Israel whose origins go back to the distant past, to the days of old. Hence Yahweh will abandon them only until she who is in labour gives birth, and then those who survive of his race will be reunited to the Israelites.”
Genesis 49:10 “The sceptre shall not pass from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute be brought him and the peoples render him obedience.”
Romans 15:12 “And in Isaiah, it says: The root of Jesse will appear, he who rises up to rule the nations, and in him the nations will put their hope.”
Matthew 1:1 – 17 “Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham: Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers, Judah fathered Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse; and Jesse fathered King David. David fathered Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, Solomon fathered Rehoboam, Rehoboam fathered Abijah, Abijah fathered Asa, Asa fathered Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat fathered Joram, Joram fathered Uzziah, Uzziah fathered Jotham, Jotham fathered Ahaz, Ahaz fathered Hezekiah, Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, Manasseh fathered Amon, Amon fathered Josiah; and Josiah fathered Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the deportation to Babylon took place. After the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah fathered Shealtiel, Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim, Eliakim fathered Azor, Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, Achim fathered Eliud, Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, Matthan fathered Jacob; and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ. The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.”
Dear brethren and friends, today my sharing is still based on the titles of our Lord Jesus Christ found in the Gospel Acclamations at Mass and the Vespers Antiphon from the Divine Office for the 17th to 24th December, also known as the O Antiphons. The hymn O Come O Come Emmanuel is based on the O Antiphons. Today, we remember that God fulfilled His promises and the Prophecies that the Messiah would be a son of King David, son of Jesse, descendant of Judah, son of Jacob (Israel), son of Isaac, son of Abraham. Praise God for His faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the Patriarchs!
O come, now Rod of Jesse’s stem,
From every foe deliver them
That trust your mighty power to save,
And give them victory over the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!
