Isaiah 8:23 – 9:1 “For is not everything dark as night for a country in distress? As the past humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, so the future will glorify the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, the territory of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; on the inhabitants of a country in shadow dark as death light has blazed forth.”
Matthew 4:12 – 17 “Hearing that John had been arrested he withdrew to Galilee, and leaving Nazara he went and settled in Capernaum, beside the lake, on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea beyond Jordan. Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who lived in a country of shadow dark as death a light has dawned. From then onwards Jesus began his proclamation with the message, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.’”
Malachi 3:19 – 21 “’For look, the Day is coming, glowing like a furnace. All the proud and all the evil-doers will be the stubble, and the Day, when it comes, will set them ablaze, says Yahweh Sabaoth, leaving them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the Sun of justice will rise with healing in his rays, and you will come out leaping like calves from the stall, and trample on the wicked, who will be like ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act, says Yahweh Sabaoth.”
Luke 1:76 – 79 “And you, little child, you shall be called Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us, to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the light of life.”
Dear brethren and friends, our Lord Jesus Christ is the Day-spring from God His Heavenly Father. Both the Lord Jesus Christ and his cousin and herald St. John the Baptist, were sent by God. St. John the Baptist in the spirit of the Prophet Elijah was to prepare the people for the Coming of the Lord in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God the Father. Our Lord Jesus Christ came from God the Father as the Messiah and the One whom the Father spoke about to Moses the Lawgiver as the One who would fulfill the Law and the One who would lead the people of God to the Eternal Promised Land. The Lord Jesus Christ came to complete the Law and the Prophets, such that we would all come to fullness in Him, by His grace and gift of the Holy Spirit, to be united in the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church which He founded.
O come, now Day-spring from on high,
And cheer us by your drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloom clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadow put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!
