Firefly

 

See this sudden star,

shining silvery-violet, has fallen

from its home of dark trees,

sky, river, into my hand, simply

as a gift.

 

One moment it bobs up and down,

and when it flies it burns

a fiery trail across my memory

that will last long

after its light blinks out.

 

Long ago life dropped

into my open palm,

like a gift, just

like this.

 

But I was never so brave,

nor danced, nor shone

so bright, as this

one
