Firefly

See how this sudden star,

shimmering silver-violet, has fallen

from its home of dark trees,

sky and river, into my hand, simply

as a gift.

One moment it bobbed up and down.

When it flew it burnt

a fiery trail across my memory

that will last long

after its light has burnt out.

Long ago life dropped

into my open palm

like a gift,

just like this.

Yet I was never brave,

nor danced, nor shone

so bright for anyone

as this one firefly.
