Stepping sideways

I always wondered how

to step sideways, so I peered

into hollows in trees, mists

that fell like veils, the soft spaces

between days and nights,

all these interstices that lead

into the wondrous world

until I realized that this

stepping sideways is only

a turn of the head

in a curtain of rain –

when a burst of sun

on a patch of grass,

this tree, this raindrop

turns into a fall of gold

upon quivering pools

of molten silver,

a dancing girl

in a crystal dress

and one bright jewel

that flashes more colours

than the whole spectrum

of the rainbow.

And I tell of this small

single moment only that

you might remember

that when the sun shines

upon you, you shine

brighter than rain of gold

and that you might remember

that upon us all the sun shines

all the time.
