Kindness of strangers

If it could be so I wish

my words fall upon you

soft-dropping and healing

like rain: my gift

to you, stranger,

this kindness

that you might remember

forever

like a common bluebottle on a puddle

the rain left behind, in the sun,

teaching me

blessed stillness,

as in the shadow of a temple

you saw me, this stranger,

looked into my soul and told me

“my dear, your life is not a punishment”

and it lessened then,

this sadness,

for in this life all we can hope for,

all we want,

all that shall save us, now

and at the end of our days,

the kindness, unexpected,

of strangers

.
